On October 11th and 12th, Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra launched its twefth season of bringing outstanding musical performances to Ventura County audiences. Clarinetist David Singer provided two masterful performances of Mozart's Concerto in A major, followed by his personal interpretation of Gershwin's "Embracable You" as an audience-pleasing encore.  The orchestra was in fine form with the Overture to Don Giovanni and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.

December 13 and 14, David Etterbeek gave two superb performances as soloist in F. J. Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra. The CHICO strings opened the first half of the program in fine form with selections from Montiverdi's Orfeo and the second half with Mozart's Serenade "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik."  The full orchestra rounded out the program with Harty's setting of G.F. Handel's Water Music and Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony.

In January, we presented our annual performance of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf for fourth-graders.  On January 17 and 18, performers selected in our young artist auditions were featured in the "Celebrating Youth" concert.  Pianist David Gatchel played the first movement of Prokokiev's Piano Concerto No. 3; Cellist Madeline Offerman played the first movement of Kabalevsky's Cello Concerto No. 1; Soprano Haley Slade sang Offenbach's Doll's Aria and Gershwin's Summertime;  Baritone Adam Hedelund sang Gluck's "Che faro senza Euridice" from Orpheus and Schubert's Ave Maria.  All soloists performed in outstanding fashion and have promising futures.  In addition, the orchestra performed Suite No. 2 from Bizet's Carmen.

March 21 and 22 featured the premiere of Bevan Manson's Santa Monica Mountains for Jazz Guitar and Chamber Orchestra with Hans Ottsen as soloist, and Maurice Ravel's dazzling Concerto in G with annual favorite Miriam Arichea as piano soloist.  As a bonus, the orchestra began the concert with Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin.

The season will conclude May 2 and 3, as CHICO teams up with the Cal State Channel Islands Choir to perform F.J. Haydn's The Creation in our annual Choral-Orchestral Spectacular.  Featured vocal soloists will be Ellie Sanders as Gabriel, Tim Dewitt as Uriel, Michael Shasberger as Raphael and Adam, and Hana Chelberg as Eve.

Note that the May 2 concert in Camarillo will be held at the Camarillo United Methodist Church at 4:00 p.m. and the May 3 concert in Ventura will return to the regular time of 4:00 p.m. in First United Methodist Church.
